NEW MATERIAL: A compound of formula I [R1 is H, halogen, COOH, or C1-6 alkyl optionally having a substituent (C1-4 alkoxy, C1-4 alkylthio or halogen); Y is N or CR2; R2 is H, halogen, OH, C1-4 alkoxy, C1-4 alkylthio, C1-6 alkyl, C3-6 cycloalkyl, benzyl, phenethyl, phenyl, naphthyl or the like; X is O or NR3; R3 is H, C1-6 alkyl, C2-6 alkenyl, C2-6 alkynyl, C3-6 cycloalkyl, benzyl or the like].
EXAMPLE: 3-Methyl-7-chloro-3H-imidazo[4,5-h]quinoline.
USE: Herbicide.
PROCESS: A compound of formula II is reacted with a compound of R2COOH or a formula R2-C(OR4)3 (R4 is C1-4 alkyl), by a conventional method, to obtain the compound of formula I (Y is CR2; X is NR3).
