Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rack-and-pinion type steering system that is capable of, when its members are worn out, limiting the area of line contact between its guide member and rack, maintaining its small rolling resistance and preventing a deterioration in the steering feeling.
SOLUTION: This rack-and-pinion type steering system comprises an output shaft 2 adapted to be rotated at steering, a rack 5 meshed with the shaft 2 to convert the rotation of the shaft 2 into rectilinear motion, a guide roller 9 for guiding the rectilinear motion of the rack 5, and a coil spring 14 for pressing the rack 5 against the shaft 2 through the roller 9. This roller 9 has a guide surface 9a, which is conformed to the periphery of the rack 5 and is formed with a pair of projection lines 10 for point contact with the periphery of the rack 5.
