To solve the following problem: an impressed voltage is high in a conventional proportional counter tube, and in order to enable two dimensional detection of a radiation entrance position, it is necessary to make a radiation detector large, operable at a high voltage, or complicated.
An anode 1 having an acute protrusion 2, an insulator 3, and a gate electrode 4 are laminated on a substrate 6 facingly disposed to a cathode 5. If a voltage is impressed on the anode 2 and the gate electrode 4, an electric field having high intensity is generated in the vicinity of the tip of the acute protrusion 2. Thereby, an electric field having intensity capable of causing an electron avalanche even at a voltage lower than the voltage applied to a conventional proportional counter tube can be obtained, and the detector can be simplified and made operable at a low voltage.
