Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a Raney catalyst for a fixed bed, which is high in initial activity and endurable to use for a long period, and to produce a high purity sugar-alcohol at a low cost by using a Raney catalyst.
SOLUTION: The lump Raney catalyst produced by (a) a 1st process for melting nickel and aluminum, (b) a 2nd process for obtain a quenched lump alloy by quenching small drops of the molten material and (c) a 3rd process for classifying the quenched lump alloy as it is or after pulverizing once and activating is recovered after used for hydrogen addition reaction under a hydrogen pressure. The recovered Raney nickel is finely pulverized and reactivated and the sugar-alcohol is produced by executing hydrogen addition reaction using the Raney catalyst under a hydrogen pressure.
