To transmit the load applied to the specified position in the body widthwise direction such as a load transmitted from wheels efficiently to the whole rear body and thereby enhance furthermore the rigidity of the rear body, in particular the torsional rigidity.
The rear body structure of the automobile is equipped with a rear floor panel 5 extending in the fore-and-aft direction of the body, a left and a right body side wall 6 installed on the two sides in the automobile width direction of the rear floor panel 5, and a left and a right gusset members 11 and 12 to couple the rear floor panel 5 with the body side walls 6 indirectly. A reinforcing cross member 7 extending in the body widthwise direction and having two ends joined with the body side walls 6 is joined with the rear floor panel 5 as attached to its top, and one-side ends of the two gusset members 11 and 12 are joined with the reinforcing cross member 7 in its specified place, and are thereby joined indirectly with the rear floor panel 5 through the reinforcing cross member 7.
