To provide a recorder recording an index file where index data of the file recording in a recording medium is hierarchically stored, in a recording medium, and to provide a recording method, a recording medium and an electronic camera.
The recorder is provided with a generating means 19 generating the index file constituted of a plurality of areas to which peculiar identifiers are allocated, and record means 32 and 33 recording the index file in the record medium 40. The generating means 19 individually stores a plurality of pieces of extracted information on a plurality of the files recorded in the recorded medium 40 in a plurality of the areas while they are associated with a plurality of the files and stores attribute information including first information identifying whether the area is a folder or it stores extracted information or not and second information displaying the folder to which the area belongs.
