A recording apparatus that carries out recording while moving a carriage, on which a recording head is mounted, by use of a motor comprises: a gear member attached to the rotor of a motor; a belt attached to the carriage and laid across so as to engage with the gear member; storage means configured to store data on a restricting signal that restricts a carriage speed change resulting from cogging torque of a motor when teeth skip is not caused; position detecting means that detects the position of the carriage; rotation angle detecting means that detects the rotation angle of the motor; teeth skip detecting means that detects an amount of teeth skip on the basis of a signal from the position detecting means and a signal from the rotation angle detecting means during the carriage movement; and correcting means that corrects a change in carriage speed by using data on a restricting signal on the basis of an amount of teeth skip.
