To form a recording apparatus provided with a line recording mode and a serial recording mode at low manufacturing cost, which can be used facilely.
A tape printing device has a line recording mode for recording on a first medium to be recorded in use of an ink ribbon IR in a state of a fixed recording head HD and a serial recording mode for recording with the use of the ink ribbon IR with respect to a second recording medium to be recorded while carrying the recording head HD in the scanning direction. The detecting sensor detects a cassette TC used during the period of a line recording mode and a cassette RC used during the period of a serial recording mode, and further the control device determines whether or not the detected effects are in agreement with a command of the line recording mode and a command of the serial recording mode.
