The recording device has a sheet detecting mechanism 200 for detecting the sheet thickness of a cut sheet at the upstream side of a platen 20. In the middle of transfer of the cut sheet, a recording head 18 is moved in accordance with the sheet thickness detected by the sheet detecting mechanism 200, whereby the platen gap is adjusted.
