PURPOSE: To provide a compressed picture reproducing device capable of improving the operability of scanning reproduction by shortening the search time of intra-frame predictively encoded pictures in the scanning reproduction of fast forwarding and rewinding, etc.

CONSTITUTION: A read track control means 3 accesses a certain prescribed distance first by information that the fast forwarding is selected and then performs a reproducing operation and a first intra-frame predictively encoded picture is discriminated and decoded by a picture decoding means 5. Then, position information stored inside the intra-frame predictively encoded picture is extracted and outputted to a position information detection means 6. Whether or not it is the valid position information is judged in the position information detection means 6 and an address for accessing the next intra-frame predictively encoded picture is transmitted to the read track control means 3. The read track control means 3 accurately jumps so as to read from the head of the next intra-frame predictively encoded picture by using the address.
