PURPOSE: To obtain the medium which allows the execution of recording at much higher density than in optical recording by using the recording medium which records, reproduces and erases information by the tunnel currents flowing between probe electrodes disposed to face each other.
CONSTITUTION: This recording medium is disposed with the probe currents facing each other and records, reproduces and erases the information by the tunnel currents flowing therebetween. Tracks 3 varied in electric conductivity with respect to a semiconductor substrate 2 are formed atop this substrate 2 and recording layers having an electric memory effect are laminated from above these tracks. The recording layers have ≥ several and ≤100, more preferably ≥ several and 30 film thicknesses and are preferably constituted of monomolecular films of org. compds. or the accumulated films of these monomolecular films. The surface of the recording medium is smooth when tracking is executed with a constant current mode by using such recording medium and, therefore, the tunnel currents flow even if off-tracking arises. The easy tracking is thus assured.
