Abstract:

PURPOSE: To reduce an aromatic aldehyde almost quantitatively with an alcohol as a hydrogen source in the presence of a catalytic amount of a specific metal such as chromium or its compound at relatively low temperature without using molecular hydrogen.

CONSTITUTION: An aromatic aldehyde is brought into contact with at least one catalyst selected from copper and its compound (except cupric oxide), chromium and its compound, manganese and its compound in the presence of an alcohol, preferably methanol or ethanol at preferably 150W300°C and reduced. The amount of the alcohol is ≥an amount equimolar with the aldehyde. The amount of the catalyst used is ≥0.01 equivalent, preferably ≥0.2 equivalent based on 1 equivalent formly group of the aromatic aldehyde to be reduced.
