PURPOSE: To readily and safely obtain dimerized product of vinyl halides useful as an intermediate for synthesizing a medicine, agricultural chemical, etc., in simple treatment and good yield, by subjecting the vinyl halides to reduction dimerization using a polar solvent and specific catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A vinyl halide expressed by formula I (R1WR3 are H, chain or cyclic alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aralkyl, aryl, heterocyclic group, acyloxy, aryloxy, etc.; X is Cl, Br or I) and derivative thereof is subjected to reduction dimerization reaction in a polar solvent such as methanol in the presence of a metal catalyst consisting of a nickel compound such as dichloro(dipyridyl) nickel (II), lead compound such as lead bromide and metal larger than lead, e.g., Al such as aluminum foil, Fe, Co, Mg or mixture thereof, as necessary in coexistence of KI used as reaction accelerator at 0W100°C to provide the aimed compound expressed by formula III, e.g., the compound expressed by formula II.
