PURPOSE: To accelerate the production of amine oxides, and to reduce nitrosoamine formation, by reacting a substrate contg. a sec. or tert. amine with a soln. of hydrogen peroxide under the existence of an alkylene aminopoly (methylene phosphonate).
CONSTITUTION: Alkylene aminopoly (methylene phosphonate) of formula I or II, where X is a compd. of formula III, (where M=H or a water-soluble non- transition metallic cation; R' = a lower 2 or 3C aliphatic or alicyclic radical; n=1-4; m=4-6), or its salt by 15-500ppmW/W in a reaction solvent, is reacted with a sec. or tert. amine (by 20,000-1,000mol per mol of the compd. of formula I or II) and soln. of hydrogen peroxide (by 100 pts.wt. based on 1-10 pts.wt. of the compd. of formula I or II), so that the sec. or tert. amine is converted into the amine oxide and the formation of nitrosoamine as a by-product is inhibited by reduction.
