To provide a projection type display device excellent in the contrast of a projection image.
The light from a light source is subjected to color separation by a cross dichroic mirror 3. The respective color-separated lights are polarized and split by polarization beam splitters 5R, 5G, and 5B into S-polarized and P-polarized lights. The S-polarized lights of the respective color lights are modulated by reflection type light valves 6R, 6G, and 6B. The polarization beam splitters 5R, 5G, and 5B analyze the respective color lights modulated by the light valves 6R, 6G, and 6B. The analyzed lights of the respective color lights are put together by a cross dichroic prism 7. The composite color light is projected by a projection lens. The light valves 6R, 6G, and 6B have liquid crystal layers and reflection layers and also have phase plate layers, functioning as 1/4-wavelength plates, formed between the both by oblique vapor deposition.
