To improve freshness-maintaining performance for food by improving precision of detection of a difference in storage state in a refrigerator and keeping stored food storage temperature suitable, and to suppress power consumption by preventing stored foods from being kept "too cold".
A refrigerator 12 includes top-face LEDs 20a, 20b and side-face lower LEDs 20g, 20h installed therein, optical sensors 21a, 20b which detect irradiation light, and light quantity adjustment means 25. The detection precision is improved by adjusting variance in light quantity among the LEDs when the irradiation light is reflected repeatedly by wall surfaces and stored foods in the refrigerator 12, and the storage state of the whole interior of the refrigerator 12 is estimated from the quantities of light of the optical sensors.
