The regenerative resistor protection device includes: a semiconductor switching element 8 and a mechanical switching element 9 for controlling energization to a regenerative resistor 14; a voltage dividing circuit 10 consisting of resistors 11, 12 and connected in parallel to the semiconductor switching element 8 and the mechanical switching element 9; an abnormal signal output means 5 to output an abnormal signal when a voltage of a predetermined level is continuously output from the voltage dividing circuit 10 over a predetermined time; and a switching element control means 7 to output an off-signal to the mechanical switching element 9 based on the abnormal signal.
