PURPOSE: To obtain the registering device facilitating the preparation and registration of a dictionary registering pattern by providing a dictionary registering means to obtain pattern recognizing dictionary data from edited image data and to register the obtained data on a pattern recognizing dictionary.

CONSTITUTION: An image processor 1 reads a source image by an image scanner or the like, and the image signal is turned to binary image data and preserved in a data file 2. A sample pattern edition part 3 reads data containing the image to be registered as the dictionary from these preserved data, displays the read data on a display 4 and segments the dictionary registering image by using a mouse 5 or a keyboard 6. Further, the unwanted part as a sample pattern is erased or a lacked part is corrected. An information compression part 7 compresses information by executing a fine line processing or vectorizing processing to the dictionary registering image edited by the sample pattern edition part 3, and a dictionary registration part 8 extracts a shape feature required for pattern recognition and registers the feature on a pattern recognizing dictionary 9.
