PURPOSE: Title adhesive for carpet that is made by making a rubber latex self- vulcanizing type, adding an aging preventive to the latex to form a latex compound and further adding a water-holding material to the latex compound to increase the viscosity, thus removing cohesive failure.

CONSTITUTION: To 100pts.wt. of a rubber latex, for example, natural rubber of low ammonia content or a mixture of styrene-butadiene and chloroprene rubbers are added 2W3 parts of sulfur, 3W10 parts of white zinc, and 1W3 parts of vulcanization accelerator as zinc dibutyldithiocarbamate as a self-vulcanizing agent. The resulting compound is combined with 1W3 parts of an aging preventive as phenyl-β- naphthylamine to form a latex compound. A water-holding substance as bentonite is added to the latex compound so that the viscosity is adjusted to a level where the coating operation can readily be done with comb plates.
