Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain a mutation inducing HIV-RT inhibitor useful for improving or maintaining antiviral receptivity to zidovudine of HIV population. CONSTITUTION: This mutation inducing inhibitor of a human immunodeficiency virus reverse transcriptase(HIV-RT) induces mutation of a methionine residue at the position 184 to be substituted with a valine residue or an isoleucine residue in a sequence encoding a reverse transcriptase(RT). An antiviral oxathiolane nucleoside, preferably (-)-2',3'-dideoxy-3'-thiacytidine, (-)-2',3'- dideoxy-5-fluoro-3'-thiacytidine may be cited as the inhibitor. In order to treat or prevent HIV infection, especially zidovudine-resistant HIV infection, a therapeutic combination of zidovudine or its physiologically mobile derivative and a mutation inducting HIV-RT inhibitor is used so as to improve or maintain the antiviral receptivity of HIV population against zidovudine by the inhibitor.
