To provide a remote control system for emitting a laser beam to a display screen of a video display apparatus, with sufficient safety measures by eliminating the possibility of emitting the laser beam to humans.

The video display apparatus 2b detects the reception of the laser beam from a remote controller 1b, controls a transmission means 27 to output a prescribed infrared ray signal 28 when detecting the laser beam, and controls the transmission means so as not to output the prescribed signal or transmits no control signal to the transmission means when detecting no laser beam. On the other hand, the remote controller includes a laser beam emission control means 12 for controlling the remote controller so that the remote controller can emit the laser beam only when the remote controller receives the prescribed signal transmitted from the video display apparatus.
