A remotely controlled transfer system for transferring an element through a transfer canal (30) adapted to be isolated, comprises a segmented track (40) for transporting an element through the transport canal (30), by means of a segmented drive screw (60) having its segments normally displaced from one another to define a gap for accommodating canal blocking means (31', 32'), the segments being linearly moveable into mating engagement.
