To provide a repair coating method which can efficiently repair the defective part of an intercoat layer of a composite coat layer which includes an intercoat layer, a base coat layer and a clear coat layer and has a feeling of white-based pearl-like gloss, in the way that the finish coating looks very satisfactory and the repaired part and the non-repaired part give no visible difference.
The defects generated in the intercoat layer of the composite coat layer which includes an electrodeposition coat layer, a white-based intercoat layer, an aqueous base coat layer containing a pearl pigment and a clear coat layer, and also is formed on a material to be coated, are repair-coated. In this repair coating, a solvent-type repair coating material with a degree of whiteness equal to that of the intercoat layer containing specified amounts of an inorganic rheology control agent and a high boiling-point solvent with easy solubility in water, is applied to the repair part. Next, the aqueous base coat coating material containing the pearl pigment is applied and further, the solvent-type clear coat coating material is applied to the surface of the aqueous base coat coating material. After these procedures, the three layers of the coats are thermally cured simultaneously and thus the composite coat layer is formed.
