PURPOSE: To obtain a resinified material for paint which is noncarcinogenic and nonmalodorous, by a method wherein a petroleum fraction having a specified average MW is extracted with a solvent such as furfural to obtain an aromatic-rich fraction which is then reacted with a gas contg. O2 or a gas contg. O2 and O3.
CONSTITUTION: A petroleum fraction having an average MW of 150W850, pref. 200W700 is extracted with a solvent such as furfural or phenol to obtain an aromatic-rich fraction having a s.p. value of not less than 7.5. The aromatic-rich fraction is reacted with a gas contg. O2 or a gas contg. O2 and O3 at a temp. of 200W300°C to obtain a resinified material for paint having a softening point of not more than 200°C and a s.p. value of 8.0W10.0. By carrying out the oxidation instead of thermal cracking, there are advantages in that the yield of resinification is enhanced and a continuous process becomes possible. Further, fuel can be saved, because the reaction is exothermic. The produced resinified material is used as a compsn. for paint either alone or in the form of a mixt, with another resin, usually dissolved in a solvent.
