A ribbon driving apparatus transmits driving from a drive section disposed in a device body of a printer to a ribbon conveyance section 300 in a ribbon cassette disposed detachably from the device body. The ribbon driving apparatus includes a drive transmission blocking mechanism to block drive transmission from the drive section to the ribbon conveyance section 300 when load applied to the ribbon conveyance section 300 is larger than a prescribed value. When the load applied to the ribbon conveyance section 300 is larger than the prescribed value, the drive transmission from the drive section to the ribbon conveyance section 300 is blocked, thereby preventing deterioration of durability of the drive transmission section even if a ribbon cannot be smoothly traveled or an abnormality occurs in the ribbon cassette due to the occurrence of ribbon jamming.
