A ribbon feeding unit 100 is equipped with the carriage 19 whereon the recording head 18 is to be mounted, a cartridge carriage 150 whereon a ribbon cartridge 51 is to be mounted, and a timing belt 39 for driving each of the carriage 19 and the cartridge carriage 150 in an antiphase. The total weight of the ribbon cartridge 51 and the cartridge carriage 150 is made almost equal to that of the recording head 18 and the carriage 19.
