PURPOSE: To have the severe operations in front of an arc furnace in the refining period of steel by said furnace done safely and automatically by a robot for working in front of furnace by attaching a TV camera for monitoring the inside of the furnace, a rotary bucket, a heating burner and lances for oxygen blowing, cutting coolant and sampling to said robot.

CONSTITUTION: The manual operations by the operator which are dangerous owing to a high temp. are accomplished by a robot for working in front of furnace in the case of refining a steel with an arc furnace. The robot body 10 is freely movable forward and backward by wheels 12 and a bucket 20 for raw material charging is attached to the top end of an arm 24 to be actuated by a cylinder 22. A burner 32 for heating the raw material, a lance 46 for cutting to be used for cutting large coolants, a lance 30 for oxygen refining, a lance 48 for measuring temp., etc. or a lance 50 for sampling of a molten metal, etc. are attached to the robot. All the refining operations at high temp. are automatically controlled by a control unit 26 provided with a cock pit 42, by which the safe refining for steel making is accomplished.
