To provide a roll for hot rolling of a metallic material which has reduced cracks and whose service life can be elongated compared with the conventional one even when used for hot rolling.

In the roll, the outer shell is formed of iron containing, by mass, 1.6 to 2.9% C, ≤1% Si, ≤1% Mn, 4 to 18% Cr, 1 to 9% Mo, 3 to 8% V and ≤5% Nb. A metal which does not enter into solid solution in the iron is further incorporated into the iron, and the fine particles of a metal which does not enter into solid solution in iron is dispersed into a layer used in the roll after solidification.
