PURPOSE: To prepare the subject roll at a low cost by forming a flame-coated layer of a ceramic on the outer peripheral surface of a metal roll, dipping or coating the roll in or with a Na2SO4 inorganic sealing agent to fill the fine holes of the ceramic flame-coated layer with the sealing agent, and subsequently polishing the surface of the ceramic layer.

CONSTITUTION: An oxide ceramic such as ZrO2 is flame-sprayed on the outer peripheral surface of a metal roll 31 to form a flame-coated layer having a prescribed thickness. The flame-coated layer 32 is dipped in or coated with a solution of a Na2SO4 inorganic sealing agent in an organic solvent or water to fill micropores 33 in the ceramic flame-coated layer 32 with a sealing agent 34. The surface of the ceramic flame-coated layer 32 is polished to form a lift out roll 3 or a layered roll 4 having a prescribed surface roughness. The rolls 3,4 are disposed on the downstream side of a tank 2 in a plate glass preparation line, and are used for continuously taking out a melted plate glass 5 prepared by pouring melted glass on a tank 2 receiving a melted metal 6.
