To make it possible to detect surface defects of a rolling roll with good accuracy.SOLUTION: A surface defect detection device for detecting surface defects of a rolling roll 1 comprises: a rotating mechanism which axially rotates the rolling roll 1; a displacement sensor 7 in which a detection part faces a surface of the rolling roll 1 and which measures a distance to a roll surface of the rolling roll 1; and a reciprocation carriage 6 which supports the displacement sensor 7, and is movable in a reciprocation direction parallel to a direction along an axial direction of the rolling roll 1.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
