Abstract:
PURPOSE: To achieve an expanded operating range, and to improve thrust characteristics of a rotary blade, which operates at a high angle of attack and low Mach number, and blade profile performance at mid Mach number.
CONSTITUTION: A rotary blade has a fixed boundary layer control device extending in the longitudinal direction of a lower surface adjacent to a trailing edge 12 to improve the lift/thrust characteristics of the blade especially at positive angles of attack. It was discovered that expected detrimental effects at zero/negative angles of attack did not materialize and the reasons are identified. Such a rotary blade is especially available for a helicopter main rotor and anti-torque rotor. A boundary layer flow deflection device 15 extends in the longitudinal direction of the trailing edge a blade profile or of the blade profile-shaped lower surface in the vicinity of the trailing edge.
