PURPOSE: To prevent chips from wrapping around the boring bar or the like of a boring tool by positively making the chips discontinuous.
CONSTITUTION: A cutting tool 23 is rotationally driven about the center Cs of a main spindle with the spindle speed, and the cutting tool 23 and a workpiece W are relatively displaced by shaft control along a plane crossing at least the axis of rotation of the main spindle 19 at right angles so that the path of relative movement between the center Cs of the main spindle and the workpiece W agrees with the shape into which the workpiece is to be cut, in order for a mutual interpolation movement to be carried out between the cutting tool 23 and the workpiece W. Thus, the workpiece W is intermittently cut by the cutting tool 23 into the shape which is determined by the interpolation path due to the mutual interpolation movement, at each rotation of the cutting tool 23.
