PURPOSE: To obtain a rotary cutting tool provided with a hard coating layer having high adhesive strength by covering the cutting edge part of a tool with a hard coating layer formed through physical vacuum evaporation process via a dispersion layer formed on the surface of a base material.
CONSTITUTION: A thin dispersion layer 8 is formed on the boundary surface between the surface of base material of cutting edge part 2 and a hard coating layer 7. And the surface area of said cutting edge part 2 becomes a layer of compound less non-metallic components such as WC, TiC, TaC, TiN etc. that form a part of the base material across a certain depth thereof. In addition, this layer exhibits its function as a bonding layer between the cutting edge part 2 serving as the base and upper layer 7, thus non-metallic components on the surface of the cutting edge part 2 being dispersed toward the layer 7. Meanwhile, a physical vacuum evaporation process shall be applied to the process of coating the layer 7. According to the above method, low temperature coating process is available and mechanical strength of base material made of sintered hard alloy can be considerably well prevented from deterioration.
