To eliminate an image defect by avoiding the collision of addenda between gears caused by switching rotary driving and developing driving and softening an impact caused by the collision, whereby the occurrence of vibration and transfer deviation is restrained.
In the rotary developing device, a plurality of developing devices 3 are mounted along the outer periphery of the cylindrical rotary developing unit 1, and the unit 1 is driven by driving sources 13 and 15 so as to successively move the respective devices 3 to a developing position opposed to a photoreceptor 10 and transfer driving for the devices 3, and a driving direction at a developing driving transfer part is set to be the same as the driving direction of the unit 1, and simple constitution using an electromagnetic clutch or a one-way clutch 11 is added to the developing driving transfer part, whereby the image defect caused by the occurrence of the transfer deviation is eliminated by avoiding the collision of the addenda between the gears, softening the impact caused by the collision and reducing the vibration and the damage of the addendum.
