PURPOSE: To eliminate the need of centering by stopping a tray and transferring a load at a transfer position on the basis of each one side of the tray and load regardless of a width of a load in a rack provided with trays for full and narrow widths.

CONSTITUTION: When a container 11 to be stored is a container 11a of full width, a movable guide 23 on an elevating carriage 2 is retreated to the same position as a fixed guide 22b or to the outside thereof, and the container 11a is guided by a pair of fixed guides 22a, 22b. When a container to be stored is a container 11b of narrow width, the movable guide 23 is moved according to the width of the container 11b and the container is guided by the fixed guide 22a and the movable guide 23. A tray 7 is stopped with one side 35 of the tray 7 positioned corresponding to the fixed guide 22a no matter whether it is of full width or narrow width. Thus, the tray is stopped and transferred on the basis of the fixed guide 22a to eliminate the need of centering.
