To provide a running control unit for vehicle having improved operability of a switching operation between an ordinary running mode and an automatic running mode.
The vehicle running control unit controls vehicle running by means of the ordinary running mode according to an acceleration pedal operation by a driver or the automatic running mode without the acceleration pedal operation by the driver. The unit includes an acceleration pedal opening degree detector for detecting the opening degree of an acceleration pedal, an acceleration pedal reaction force controller for controlling the magnitude of an acceleration pedal reaction force, and a running mode switcher for switching the ordinary running mode and the automatic running mode. When the opening degree of the acceleration pedal detected by the acceleration pedal opening degree detector is a predetermined threshold or smaller, the acceleration pedal reaction force controller produces a predetermined change (for example, click feeling) onto an acceleration pedal reaction force characteristic to the opening degree of the acceleration pedal. The running mode switcher switches the running mode according to the acceleration pedal operation by the driver to the above predetermined change.
