Abstract:
To provide a method of deploying an inflatable member, such as a safety bag (airbag) restraining the body of an occupant in a motor vehicle.
A buffer zone 28 is pressurized by the firing of inflation initiator 54 to rupture a seal formed as a separator disk 24 or a movable piston and release liquid propellant 32 into the buffer zone for controlled ignition. The ignited liquid propellant generates a large volume of gas that is cooled and pressure buffered prior to gas introduction into the safety bag.
