PURPOSE: To inexpensively obtain an excellent scale preventive agent by using a water-soluble salt of a copolymer of indene or a component having the reactive double bond in arom. hydrocarbon (naphtha oil) essentially consisting of the indene and maleic anhydride.
CONSTITUTION: Indene or a polymerizing component of the naptha oil essentially consisting of the indene and maleic anhydride are brought into reaction under the condition of a radical polymn. in the presence or absence of a radical initiator to obtain a copolymer. This copolymer is used in the form of the salt of the copolymer in order to make soluble in water. Namely, the copolymer is used as an alkali metal salt or ammonium salt, such as sodium or potassium or as the mixture composed thereof. Since an excellent scale suppressing ability is exhibited by using such salts, this agent is effective for preventing the scale of heat exchangers, bodies, etc. The use of the naphtha oil which is an inexpensive by-produced oil is possible without executing separating and refining and, therefore, the scale preventing agent is obtd. at a low cost.
