Abstract:
PURPOSE: To efficiently luster a paper web by wetting and preheating the paper web and then introducing it into a calendering nip to subject it to the calendering treatment at the temperature over a glass transition point of a polymer incorporated in the paper web.
CONSTITUTION: In the lustering step of the paper web, the paper web W is continuously carried to a heatable hard roll 1 through a guide roll 7 and a position-variable adjusting roll 6 and is wetted and preheated by supplying steam from a steam box 4 or supplying water while adjusting the contacting length between the adjusting roll 6 and a position-adjusting roll 1. The wetted and preheated paper web is subjected to the calendering treatment at the calendering nip N formed between the roll 1 and a soft roll 2 being in contact with the roll 1 at a temperature over the glass transition point of the polymer incorporated in the paper web. Otherwise, the paper web is inserted into the nip N through an endless looped band formed from a fiber-reinforced polymer or metallic material such as steel while adjusting the contacting pressure and the contacting length with the roll 1 by adjusting the tension of the band.
