PURPOSE: To inexpensively obtain N-alkylated aniline useful as chemicals, an oxidation inhibitor, a plasticizer or vulcanization accelerator by reacting aniline and a lower alkanol within a specific temp. range in the presence of synthetic acidic zeolite having micropores.
CONSTITUTION: A lower alkanol (e.g.; methanol) and aniline are used in a molar ratio of 1:3 and reacted in the presence of a synthetic acidic zeolite catalyst at 250-350°C (pref., 300-350°C) in a vapor phase or a liquid phase to obtain N- alkylated aniline (e.g.; N-methylaniline, N,N-dimethylaniline). The above catalyst is acidic zeolite having a pore size of 6-8 with a three-dimensional tubular and, for example, zeolite S-115 is designated. This zeolite has long catalytic life and can be reactivated by heating zeolite to high temp. It is effective to make the stagnation time of reactants on the catalyst relatively long over 0.1-40 sec.
