Abstract:

To provide a semiconductor memory device for byte-based masking operation, and a method of generating parity data.

The memory cell array 310 stores normal data and parity data. The ECC engine 350 calculates the parity data using the normal data including a first area that is to be updated and a second area that is to be saved by the masking operation in a masking mode for masking operation.
