Abstract:

PURPOSE: To separate and purify the titled compounds, by the column chromatography with a reversed phase partition column packed with a packing having 3W 28C alkyl groups joined to silica and a mixture of acetone with methyl alcohol and water as an eluent.

CONSTITUTION: A fatty acid mixture containing ≥20C long chain highly unsaturated fatty acids having ≥3 double bonds in one molecule or esters thereof, preferably a fatty acid mixture obtained by hydrolyzing a marine animal or vegetable fat or oil, is developed in a reversed phase partition column packed with a packing having 3W28C alkyl groups joined to silica with a mixture solution of acetone with methyl alcohol and water as an eluent to elute, separate and purify eicosapentaenoic acid or an ester thereof and then docosahexaenoic acid or an ester thereof one after another in high purity with high efficiency. The packing can be easily regenerated economically for reuse.
