PURPOSE: To provide a battery separator which can be applied to a battery having a high energy density and excellent even in the characteristic recovery after being left at a high temp. for a long time by consolidating polyolefin series fibers with the mechanical strength sunk through reactions with hydrophilic groups with the same type fibers having a large dia. which are free from risk of extreme deterioration in the strength.
CONSTITUTION: Polypropylene fibers 1 with the mean fiber dia. of unwoven cloth over 5 μm are fusion attached to another group of fibers 2 having a mean fiber dia. below 5 μm at contacting parts 3. These different fibers are chemically coupled in such a way that part of polypropylene carbons as constituent is in bond with -SO3H or -SO3M, where M is metal susceptible to be ionized such as Na. Therein SO3H etc. intrudes from the surfaces and joins with carbon to form a sulphonized part 6, which exerts a role of giving the hydrophilic property. The b-part is formed from the opposite side, is in junction with this sulphonized part, and has a lesser mechanical strength, and this phenomenon will not occur in those of the group 2 fibers which have larger dias. Hybrid existence of the group 1 and group 2 and fusion attachment of them together at the contacting parts shoulds improve the mechanical strength as an unwoven cloth to a great extent.
