To reduce the number of drive motors mounted on a serial printer by enabling the position of a change gear to be freely switched over by the activation of a mechanism for switching the urging of an urging spring and the transmission of power by a gear, between a position for engagement with a gear for gap adjustment and a position for engagement with a gear for switching from a cut form to a form web or vice versa.
This serial printer conprises a print gap adjusting mechanism receiving a rotating force transmitted by the rotation of a gear 11 for gap adjustment through gears 10, 9. In addition, the printer is equipped with a mechanism for switching from a cut form to a form web or vice versa, with a gear 12 for switching from the cut form to the form web or vice versa for transmitting its rotation to an open bar 17 through gears 13, 14, 16 to switch over from the cut form printing mode to the form web printing mode or vice versa. In this case, a drive motor 28 is installed as a common drive source and at the same time, a trigger part 33 is formed on the terminal part of a carriage frame 32 as a mechanism for switching a gear transmission. The trigger part 33 enables a change gear 24 to be engageable with either of the gear 11 for gap adjustment or the gear 12 for switching from the cut form to the form web or vice versa.
