To provide a set top box, along with a bidirectional communication system using the same, capable of video telephone and video conference only by a simple operation without using personal computers.
The set top box is connected to a communication apparatus having at least a data communication means and receiving data transmitted from the communication apparatus and displaying it on a display device. The set top box comprises a data transmitting means capable of transmitting transmission data to the communication apparatus side, an external equipment connection means for connecting external equipment, and an SIP communication means which allows use of a session initiation protocol (SIP). Thus, transmitting/receiving data to/from the communication apparatus can be performed.
