PURPOSE: To provide a method by which a rolling roll can be accurately ground to an expected aimed form even in the case where the rolling roll has temperature distribution.
CONSTITUTION: Temperature at each part of a rolling roll at the time of grinding after the lapse of a fixed time from the ending of rolling is computed through a thermal conduction equation on temperature which is obtained by a computer being able to estimate the roll temperature after rolling and measured at the time of the ending of rolling in each part in the high-torso direction of the rolling roll. The quantity of thermal expansion at each part of the roll during grinding is computed from reference temperature in the case of determining the aimed form of the roll and temperature during grinding, and the aimed form of each part of the roll at the time of grinding is computed from the quantity of thermal expansion and the aimed form of each part of the roll at the reference temperature. The aimed form of each part of the roll at the time of grinding is set up in a numerically controlled grinding machine as grinding data.
