PURPOSE: To raise and lower a cloth pressure by driving a needle bar along and mitigate noise at the time of stoppage of the cloth presser by a method wherein a spring is mounted between the needle bar and the cloth pressure to press the cloth presser down and a pull-up member is provided on the needle bar to pull up the cloth presser when the needle bar rises.

CONSTITUTION: When a driving member 6 descends, a needle bar 4 is lowered against the force of a spring 15 via a seat member 13 and a pull-up member 37 descends, causing a cloth presser 5 to descend together with the needle bar 4. When a stopper member 28 is received by a seat 27a of a guide member 27 and the cloth presser 5 stops descending, a cloth contact 23 of the cloth presser 5 comes in contact with a cloth 43 so that the cloth 43 is laid on a throat plate 1. When the needle bar 4 continues to descend further, a spring 39 is compressed by a spring seat 36. On the other hand, when the driving member 6 rises, the needle bar 4 is raised by the force of the spring 15 and a needle 12 is pulled out from the cloth 43. At this time, the cloth contact 23 of the cloth presser 5 is pressed down by the spring 39, so that the cloth 43 is kept from rising up. After that, the pull-up member 37 is connected to a connector member 40.
