PURPOSE: To prevent stepped parts from buckling and heaped thickness by a method wherein a shadow mask holding structure to be mounted on the panel inside surface of a cathode-ray tube is formed by press molding so that the surface of its stepped parts may have stringlike grooves.
CONSTITUTION: A holding structure 2 holding a shadow mask 1 is formed by pressing a thin steel plate of thickness less than about 1mm in order to form the side wall 2b vertical to the main surface 2a while further forming the stepped parts 2c for removing interference by a welding electrode to the side wall 2b when welding a plate spring 4 to a bimetal 3 of the structure 2. Thereby, a stringlike groove 9 and the groove 10, which is deeper than the groove 9 and provided inside thereof, are formed in the stepped parts 2c and the holding structure 2 is formed by cutting the main surface 2a between the grooves 9 and 10. Accordingly, the groove 10 pulls the material inside when cutting so as to remove generation of buckling and heaped thickness of the stepped parts 2c, thus the holding structure of good performance can be obtained.
