PURPOSE: To enables recognition of the shape of an object by photographing a transparent object free from optical nature thereof by irradiating the transparent object with a directive light to take a bright line formed at a part where the light enters the object and at a part where the light is emitted.
CONSTITUTION: Linear light 32 emitted from a He-Ne laser 13 is turned to a sheet-like light 34 with a cylindrical lens 33 to irradiate a transparent object 35. As a result, a part of the light 34 is scattered at an incident part 41 and emission parts 42-44 of the surface of the object 35 to form a bright line. For example, when a rectangular through hole 35a (a part as indicated by the two- dot chain line) is formed at the center of the plane of the object 35, a part of the light 34 is scattered along the circumferential surface thereof and a bright line is formed as done on the outer circumferential surface of the object 35, which allows the recognition of not only the shape of the appearance of the object 35 but also the details of the internal structure thereof. So, the contour of the object by the bright line is taken with a CCD camera 37 from above the object 35 and projected onto an image monitor 39 to measure the position and the shape of the object 35 with an image processor 40.
