PURPOSE: To provide a sharp-edged tool which has excellent hardness, toughness, wear resistance and corrosion resistance and is easily maintainable by subjecting a base metal made of a Ti material for the sharp-edged tool to a heat treatment to harden said material and forming further a high-hardness surface layer consisting of a compd. of Ti by vapor plating.
CONSTITUTION: Ti or Ti alloy is subjected to hot or cold forging and is ground or polished after slicing or outside shape trimming to form the base metal 2 to be used as the prototype for the sharp-edged tool such as a cutting blade, saw tip or needle. The base metal 2 is subjected to the heat treatment to form a diffusion layer 4 and the hardened layer 3 of the nitrided, oxidized or carbonized layer by oxidation or carbonization and/or to the heat treatment to increase the hardness over the entire part of the base metal by age hardening. The base metal 2 is further subjected to the vapor plating to form the surface layer 5 consisting of the compd. of Ti and having the high hardness. Dressing is executed after the grinding, polishing or vapor plating.
